Shower units are becoming more popular than bath units due to their practicality and lower water consumption. Showers are available in a variety of styles to suit each home, but a model that balances cost and style is always preferable. Here are a few tips to help you choose the right shower for your home. 
Shower Options
Mixer Shower: A mixer shower allows you to get hot and cold water streams of equal pressure through your shower. There are various types of mixers. Push-on Mixer: In the push-on mixer, the hose and shower head can be connected to the bath tap when needed. The bath/shower mixer has a combination bath tap and shower hose with a head. Both are ideal fixtures over a bath; they have an easy installation process, but temperature control is not as exact as some prefer. Thermostatic Mixer: The thermostatic mixer has a wall unit containing the hose and spray, with hot and cold water supplied by a common valve. A stabilizer regulates water temperature which makes it a convenient, but costly option. Electric Shower: An electric shower has a heating wall unit powered by electric current. Its stabilizer regulates water temperature and also keeps the heated water independent of other taps in your house. The drawback here is that temperature is a trade-off against water pressure.
Installation Process
For optimal performance, the shower has to be compatible with the existing plumbing system or the one being installed. Have a plumber inspect your bathroom size and layout so they can recommend the best possible combinations of plumbing lines and shower units. They will also need to help with a draining system, as well as the electric cabling if you are going electric.
Placement of Shower
The shower can be installed over a bath to utilize space optimally, especially if your bathroom is already fitted with one. You have the advantage of being able to use either the bath or the shower at all times, although a shower curtain does not always keep the rest of your bathroom completely dry. A separate shower enclosure retains water within more efficiency, but may look slightly cramped. Clear glass walls around the enclosure can lend to a more open feel.

The advantage of fixed heads is the neat look of the installation with all the pipes hidden from sight. However, it is difficult to choose a convenient height for all your family members. The option is an adjustable rail along which the shower head can be vertically slid by each user to fix it at the desired height.
- Many showers offer a rotating dial around the shower head for spray control. With this, you will be able to adjust the water pressure and pattern for a unique bathing experience.
- Choosing the right plumber is as important as choosing the right shower for your home. Check their qualifications and the validity of their insurance. The latter will protect you in case of any leaks and ensuing water damage complaints from the neighbors.
