bathroom-389262_640When you’ve just completed a remodelling project of your bathroom, the last thing you want is to see your hard work blemished by bathroom mold. If left untreated, mold spreads fast, damaging walls, floors, and fixtures, not to mention your health. Fortunately, there are a few simple methods you can apply to get this bathroom menace under control.

1. Ammonia

While ammonia is an effective solution, it is vital not to apply it if you have used or plan to use bleach. These two products create extremely dangerous fumes when mixed, so they must be kept separate at all times. With this in mind, you can tackle mold by spraying it with clear ammonia and using a brush to scrub it clean. Ventilate the room and leave it for two hours before wiping the area clean.

2. Bleach and Baking Soda

Baking soda has a wide range of cleaning applications. To use it in your bathroom, mix one cup with enough hot water to form a paste. You may also add a teaspoon of liquid soap and a few drops of an essential oil. Scrub the mold with this mixture to remove the heavier deposits. Next, spray the area with a mixture of 2 parts water to 1 part bleach. Allow it to dry before spraying a second time and using a brush to remove any remaining mold. Rinse the area with water and then dry it thoroughly.

3. Hydrogen Peroxide

Using 3 percent hydrogen peroxide, spray the moldy area and leave it to take effect between 10 and 20 minutes. Scrub to remove the mold and then ventilate the area for a few hours before returning to wipe the surface clean. Store your hydrogen peroxide in a dark bottle as it is photosensitive. Before use, you may also want to test it on a small area to ensure that it does not cause any colors to fade.

4. Borax

This powerful cleaning agent is another inexpensive and effective option. Mix one cup of Borax with a gallon of water and spray this solution onto the affected area. Scrub thoroughly to remove the mold and then wipe the area clean.

5. Vinegar

Like baking soda, vinegar has a variety of cleaning applications. It is particularly effective against mold as its acidity creates an environment in which the mold struggles to grow. To apply it, simply decant some white vinegar into a spray bottle. There is no need to mix it with anything, just spray it onto the surfaces you want to clean, leave for approximately one hour, ventilating the bathroom in the meantime. When you return, wipe the surface with warm water and dry it thoroughly. You can even spray problem areas with it regularly to prevent mold from regrowing. If you follow these easy methods we’ve comprised above, you can protect your bathroom and your health with minimal effort and for an affordable price.
